Zuma Canyon is located in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area outside of greater Los Angeles. The banding station has been in operation for almost 30 years. It is what we call a year round constant effort station, as we band biweekly on Saturdays. Banding occurs in the bottom of the canyon. The habitat is a mixture of chaparral, riparian woodland, and ruderal. Both resident and migratory birds are caught. We average about 1000+ birds/year. Our species count is now 109 taxa. Zuma serves primarily as a teaching/training station.
Visitors are welcome to observe our banding operations.
